The 1986 season was pure drama. Prost, Piquet, and Mansell traded wins all year, until Mansell’s tyre exploded in Adelaide and handed the championship to Prost.One of the most memorable finishes of the decade.
And since this was 1986, you couldn’t just order online. You filled out the form in the lower corner, clipped your receipt, and waited for the tape to arrive by post. That process alone makes this ad feel like an artifact from another world. Slower, more tangible, and rich with nostalgia.

In the late 1960s, Rolex launched what would become one of the most effective advertising strategies in modern brand history: a quiet, confident series built around the line “If you were…”. Each version placed the brand not in a showroom, but in the field. On the wrist of someone climbing Everest, racing a Porsche, negotiating at the UN, or flying a jet at altitude.
This particular ad, released in 1969 while Concorde was still in development, aligned Rolex with the most advanced passenger aircraft the world had ever seen.
By linking the GMT-Master to Concorde and Pan Am’s transatlantic pilots, the brand signalled exactly where it intended to belong: with professionals operating at the front edge of possibility.
The GMT-Master itself had been developed a decade earlier with Pan Am as a dual-time tool for long-haul aviators. But this ad wasn’t aimed only at pilots. It was aimed at passengers who lived between time zones, made decisions in the air, and valued reliability built for use, not display.
The Rolex GMT-Master 1675 is one of the most recognisable references in the brand’s history, and enjoyed the longest uninterrupted production run of any Rolex model. Campaigns like this played no small part in that success, positioning the watch not only as a luxury but as a professional tool trusted by those who moved across borders and time zones with purpose.
